food store sector and the factors that affect management of supply chains. Examples of major grocery chains in the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe are provided and discussed.
The essay also comments on the difficulties of measuring the performance of supply chains. Supply Chain Philosophies and Functions There are four perspectives related to the supply chain framework,
each of which would need to be monitored for success. The perspectives are: goals perspective, which would relate to reducing unit costs or waste or being more flexible (Brewer and
Speh 2000). The Customer Benefits perspective is about achieving the goals that provide benefits for the customer; the financial benefits perspective emphasizes reduced cost and greater profit; and the SCM
Improvement perspective, which is more complex and includes using identified best practices, continuous learning and improving and working for a sustainable competitive advantage (Brewer and Speh, 2000). Some authors suggest
there are just three levels of activities relative to supply chain management. Strategic activities emphasize optimizing networks and developing various partnerships with different stakeholders (exforsys.com 2009). Communication is especially important
