the health and well-being of the planet and all of its inhabitants. The problems seem too large for one very small person or group of people to notably change.
However, the emerging ideology and practices of restoration ecology and biology provides a powerful means through which it is possible to make that singular difference. Can Nature Heal Itself? Those
who criticize the ideas and practices of restoration biology/ecology believe that nature is powerful enough to right the wrongs caused by humanity. Their argument is that the energy of the
sun, natural processes developed over billions of years can indefinitely renew the topsoil, water, air, forests, grasslands, and wildlife upon which all species depend. The problem lies in the fact
that for too many years, at least the past two centuries the renewable resources of the Earth may have been used faster than they can be replenished. Restoration biologists and
ecologists understand that in order to establish and maintain a sustainable life, it is essential to not waste energy or avoid relying upon the very resources that can best "sustain"
life. They believe that it is essential to not only learn to take advantage of the virtually inexhaustible solar energy of sunlight, wind, flowing water, renewable wood but to then
do whatever is possible but to find a way to replace the resources that are most certainly "exhaustible." The student working on
this project (and any other aspect of ecological sustainability) should always keep in mind that finite supplies of coal, oil, and natural gas produced underground over a time period of
millions of years are being depleted at rate hundreds of times faster than the rate at which they were created. To establish and maintain a sustainable life for the human
