first thing that comes to mind is the reception to the film when it was first released, which was largely hostile (Chin, 1994). Critics and audience members were greatly upset
by the fact that the film did not do "justice to the play," which is one of Shaws best and most popular works (Chin, 1994). There was also apparently dislike
both of Otto Premingers style as an "auteur" director, and Jean Sebergs performance, which was widely castigated (Chin, 1994). An "auteur" director is one whose style is so distinctive
that an audience knows instantly who has done the film; theyd know it even if they hadnt seen the credits or looked at the posters. Hitchcock is possible the supreme
example of an auteur; we only have to look at one of his films for a matter of minutes before we know who did it. Tarantino is another; so is
Orson Welles; and we should probably put some Europeans like Truffaut, Renoir, Bergman and Antonioni on the list. The thinking here seems to be that because Preminger is considered an
auteur, he insisted upon imposing his vision of the story onto Shaws work, thereby diminishing the end product. The other main bone of contention is Jean Sebergs performance. Seberg,
who committed suicide in 1979 at age 40, is a tragic figure in world cinema. Shes probably best known for ? bout de souffle (Breathless), which appeared in 1960. With
her short-cropped hair, huge eyes and petite stature, she seems more like an elf maiden than the tough girlfriend of an unstable gangster (Jean-Paul Belmondo). Her performance in that film
