a concentration camp during WWII. In this story the reader is not really made aware of where they are or what is going on, but rather the reader is given
images that lead them to know that is where they are. It is a story with a great deal of imagery and a story that can well be explicated in
different ways. The following paper offers a response of a commentary on this short story. It should be noted that the student requesting this paper asked for one source, the
commentary. As such this paper will not quote Ozicks story but rather simply refer to it. Response on a Commentary of The Shawl
The author of this commentary states that "Ozick focuses only on Rosa, Rosa only on Magda, and Magda only on the shawl" (Scrafford 11). This, however, is not
true for if it were true there would be no other characters in the story. There is another character, Rosas child named Stella who was far older than the infant
and in just as much need as Rosa and Magda, the infant. Stella is very important for she is very symbolic of the youth that was destroyed in the concentration
camps, and symbolic of the true need to survive, something not really seen in the mother or the infant who all but seem to accept their fate.
The author further illustrates the seemingly unimportant role of Stella in the story stating, "She says little and seemingly performs only one function in the
story-the stealing of little Magdas shawl, which leads to the death of the child. Although she is responsible for Magdas death, she is not in this sense necessary to the
