The following paper offers up a response to the film with an examination of ethos, pathos, logos and rhetorical fallacy. The paper illustrates how his film highlighted truths about the city of Paris which is really a city filled with many racial tensions as well as class tensions. Response: La Haine by Kassovitz Mathieu Kassovitz is a reliable director for a few reasons. He was born in Paris and he is multicultural, like his characters. Combined his parents were French, Catholic, Hungarian and Jewish. This would give the viewer the understanding that the director has some experience with the multicultural issues within the film. He is also a young male. But, there is not information that indicates he is a young man who has lived like these men. He was born to a father who was a film director and may not have struggled as his characters do. Chances are he has known, at the very least, young men like his characters. Overall he appears to be a reliable source for the material he provides. The pathos within this film is evident, especially for American viewers, through the focus on multicultural individuals. In the United States multicultural conditions appear far more accepting than those in Paris according to the film. These ethnic young men are struggling in a society that dismisses them and they are ultimately kind young men. Circumstances all but attack them and give them little choice in the directions they will take.
