to embrace the reader. That is, without drawing readers in through caring about the characters, the story would be rather confusing, and somewhat bland. It is an inserting story, but what is most exciting is the way in which characters are portrayed. At each turn, the reader is able to become further involved in the key elements of the narrative. The setting is important too. The story takes place prior to a change to post-modernity where quaint towns and traditions mattered. In fact, the author develops the theme by revealing charming modes of living, while also addressing the negative aspects of holding tight to ones beliefs. In the end, the protagonist is killed due to the philosophy of others. This poses an interesting position for the reader. Obviously, the sympathies will lie with the victim, but through excellent character development, the author is able to muster some support even for the murderous among them. The methods employed by this author only works due to the point of view. The narrator is not a key player and so, there is the knowledge of these various views that provide the reader with much fodder for discussion. Had the author decided to write in first person, from the view of the victim as some authors might, the story would not have been told in a non-linear manner nor would it have revealed the number of elements that make the story so exciting. The quality of characterization is what is great about this work, and the presentation of the setting only enhances the story. In providing a narrator, the author enhances what he has set out to do.
