document, entitled "Managing Slaves," makes clear, in the antebellum South, whites did not regard black Americans as full-fledged human beings. Rather, slaves were depicted as being similar to intelligent
animals. This is particularly evidenced when the anonymous author refers to slaves as "creatures," and encourages slave owners to treat their slaves well because they "breed" much faster when they
are adequately fed and clothed (263). As this indicates, African Americans were regarded more in terms of pack animals then anything else. Of the first hand account of what slave
conditions were actually like, none is more descriptive or eloquent then that of Frederick Douglass. Various aspects of slave life become evident from reading Douglass account. First of all, it
is clear that the structure of slave life was intended to rob slaves of any feelings of individuality. This was accomplished in both overt and subtle ways. For example,
Douglass can only approximate his birth date. It was recognized that even the simplest information would aid slaves in feeling as if they were individuals, so it was denied them.
Even such information as when they were born. A slave could be beaten for asking such questions. Also Douglass didnt know, for certain, who is father was. He didnt
know for sure who his father was, he only knew that he was white, and quite possibly, his master. Douglass looks unflinchingly at all the ramifications of the practice of
increasing ones slave holdings through raping female slaves. He points out that in the South, the mistress of the house always made life more difficult for the mulatto children of
her husband then for the regular slaves. It was not an unusual scenario for a white slave owner to have a child by his white wife whipping the skin off
