specialty looks at the practice of respiratory therapy within the environment of an acute care hospital and also within a long-term care facility. Many respiratory therapists (RTs) work within
hospital environments. They are part of a team that helps patients who have a variety of illnesses (Mitchell, 1999). An RT may treat a premature infant whose lungs have not
fully developed, or aid at patient with chronic, long-term long disease such as emphysema (Mitchell, 1999). An RT may work with an AIDS patient who is having respiratory difficulties or
help a child suffering from asthma (Mitchell, 1999). RTs working in hospital settings require "top-notch skills" that are up to date on the latest technological innovations as they handle
critical situations managing patients on life-support systems and treating trauma. As this suggests, they are an essential part of a healthcare team, which is made up of physicians, nurses
and other healthcare professionals trained to handle crisis situations. RTs use computerized equipment to monitor the volume and flow of air as the patient breathes, and evaluates this information in
regards to lung function. If patients cannot breath on their own, RTs are trained on how to intubate patients and connect them to ventilators, which are computerized machines designed to
breathe for the patient, delivering air to the lungs (Mitchell, 1999). The RT in a long-term care facility works also works as part of an interdisciplinary team, but the
