Much like becoming a leader or entering into the police force, a military individual must abide by rules that are not the norm for the civilians of the nation. The following paper examines and discusses one of those rules, the rule that requires respect towards those individuals who hold a higher rank. It should be noted that the respect an individual below Lieutenant gets is the same respect that should be shown any officer, in any branch of the military, which includes the Army. As such the paper examines respecting officers in the military in general. Respecting Officers in the Military When one envisions an officer in the military it is generally assumed that they have worked hard to get where they are. As they rise in rank they demonstrate that they have qualities that have been honed, and they have further worked hard in the military. As such they should receive respect because they have earned it in many ways, often ways unknown to any particular individual. The fact that they have risen in rank is enough proof for the lesser military individual to know that they have earned respect. At the same time an officer is also obliged to give respect to others as well, even privates and those individuals under them. If they were arrogant and presumptuous then they would be of a character that did not necessarily deserve respect. One author notes, for example, "Respect is a virtue in both directions, both up and down the chain of command -- though it takes slightly different forms depending on which direction its aimed in.
