for authority can mean many different things to many different people. The following paper discusses what respect for authority means, or may mean, for an individual in the 5th grade.
Respect for Authority Some people have respect for authority, and some people do not. Some people may think that respect for authority means that someone should shut up and
listen to people who are older. For example, a child should always be quiet and listen to teachers, parents, grandparents, professionals such as doctors and ministers, and anyone who is
older and an adult. Many children think that respect for authority means respect for those that are older, those that are grown ups. A child in the 5th grade
may not have the ability to see beyond this concept. They may see that respect for authority means to shut up in the presence of grown ups and just do
what they are told. They do not necessarily understand the difference between respect for elders and respect for authority. When we think of a respect for authority we must think
of the fact that we are respecting someone who knows more about something than we do. We respect a teacher because they are teaching us something we do not know.
We respect our parents because they have experienced more than we have and we can learn from their experience and their wisdom. We respect the laws of the land because
they know more about crime than we do and we know that we must listen to such laws in order to be safe. We respect the government because we are
