civilian alike. The dictionary provides many definitions of respect, including esteem for others; regard for others; thinking highly of others and their opinions and so on. But in the military,
respect becomes even more important because of the unique nature of the services, in which the concept of the "chain of command" comes into play. Everyone is familiar with the
idea of a hierarchy; that is, an employee has a boss who has a boss and so on, up to the president of the company. In the military, this structure
is extremely rigid and is referred to as the chain of command. The enlisted personnel are expected-in fact they take an oath-that they will obey the orders of those personnel
who are senior to them; breaking this oath can result in a charge of insubordination. Each member of the chain understands his or her duties and responsibilities, and how they
are to be carried out. In addition, lower ranks trust the skill and judgment of more senior personnel; it is this trust and, yes, respect, that allows officers and senior
enlisted personnel to give orders that might result in the lower-ranking person losing his life. One source says that the chain of command, "serves everyone. It provides a method
of showing respect to the next senior person in the chain as well as a method of maintaining the integrity of the organization" (Chain of command). Its detrimental to the
organization, the mission, and understanding to bypass the chain of command; if there is no senior present, it may be necessary, but ordinarily, this command structure should be followed (Chain
of command). People who are bypassed in this way may feel that they are not trusted, which may make them doubt their own abilities and falter in a similar situation
