Respect is a very powerful social tool, a very powerful social reality that ultimately helps keep societies and cultures strong and supportive. The following paper examines why it is important to respect the property of others and what problems are associated with disrespect. Respect One could well argue that there are many people in society that do not respect the personal property of others. They, however, are likely taught from an early age that this is not right for even young children, in school or home, are taught "that stealing and vandalism are wrong" (The Standards Site, 2007). But, in society, as people get older, they tend to care less about the property of others. And, although respect seems to be something that people associate with other people, not things, respecting personal property is ultimately respecting an individual. It is important to respect the personal property of others because that individual has likely worked hard at achieving what they have, in obtaining what they have. An example may be someone who is walking down a sidewalk and walks across someones front yard, pulling up some plants maybe, or kicking the ground and ruining a lawn. They may not think this means anything but to the individual who has planted that grass, planted those plants, this means damaged plants and more work. Even though the individual who does the damage does not see the person working in the yard, they are destroying something they made.
