gay families are healthy, children of such families are perceived as different. This is true in part because there is a lot of prejudice in society. It is also particularly
true because the culture puts the traditional, nuclear family on a pedestal, suggesting that this is the only way that families should be formed. This point of view is often
conveyed in the context of social institutions such as schools and houses of worship. Tutwiler (2005) remarks: "Although acceptance of gay and lesbian lifestyles has increased, prejudice and discrimination persist"
(p.42). When it comes to children and adolescents who are from gay homes, is there treatment and support services for them? Colage is one organization that is designed to
help such children and teenagers. The organizations stated mission is as follows: " To engage, connect, and empower people to make the world a better place for children of lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and/or transgender parents and families" ("Colage," 2007). This organization reports that ten million people have parents who are either gay, lesbian or transgender ("Colage," 2007). The organization sponsors
events like Family Week where a number of young people ages nine through eighteen get together with their families ("Colage," 2007). This is an idea that makes sense. In lieu
of, or in addition to counseling, children are able to see that they are not the only ones who have a parent that does not fit into the mainstream. This
experience alone is likely enough to help an individual who feels insecure about his or her family life. Yet, the group offers a variety of services and activities. Services are
also available at regular school systems around the nation. While individual counseling services are available at most any school, regardless of family disposition, children and adolescents may not feel comfortable
