bolster its position in the Gulf, including the initiation of a new drive to oust Saddam Hussein" (p. xi). These words, which seem both na?ve and overly optimistic
today, highlight one of the difficulties with books like this one: they cant keep up with current events. But the last sentence is telling, because it clearly states
the real reason for the American invasion of Iraq: its the oil, nothing more. The rest of the justification for military intervention, including all the lies about WMDs,
was just that, justification, designed to fool the American people and gain support for this latest war for resources. Its a tragedy for us, for Iraq, and for the
rest of the world that we failed to see through the smokescreen. (Youll have gathered that Im not a fan of the current administration, and youre right.) America is not
the only country to go to war for resources, but we are the most powerful. Instead of using that power in a positive way, we have instead opted for
