be a fair model for living, and is what Karl Marx criticized many decades ago. How can equity in income be achieved? Of course, income equity will not necessarily resolve
the problem of poverty. There will always be people for which the concept of "income" will be foreign. Many people who live on the streets for example have mental health
problems. Still, there is a more serious problem here that involves the working poor. How can the United States use its resources more effectively so that hunger is eliminated and
that poor people can get out of their uncomfortable strata? A paradigm change is in order. Some believe the solution comes in the form of doing proactive things which
are simple such as raising the minimum wage. Others think that the solution should come in the form of government services or handouts. While government can do a certain amount
of good in trying to level the playing field, it is difficult to legislate equity. In a capitalist society, paying people at the lowest levels of the firm a high
salary, and lowering that of the CEOs is getting too close to communism. Of course, communism in its ideal sense would not see a corporate entity as it is known,
but companies like Ben & Jerrys have made a decision to place limits on how much money one employee can make in relationship to the lowest level employee. There is
a five to one salary ratio at that company. In essence, if the lowest level employee earns $20,000 for example, the CEO cannot earn above $100,000. This type of model
would certainly create increased income equity. That is a first step. However, there is a significant black market or off the books laborers who only hurt themselves. Their employers
