two sides have been fighting for the same strip of land, claiming it a birthright, and leaving death and destruction in the quest for peace. In part, the fight is
over land deemed to a particular group, but there is no legal basis for the Palestinians to claim the land. The two groups-Israelis and Palestinians-have been unable to agree on
a solution. Each group wants the whole of the land and it will not be shared. Of course, Israel has the upper hand. It has the bulk of the land.
Statistics show that unemployment is slightly over 10% in Israel versus the 60% in Palestine ("The Facts," 2002, p.18). Israels infrastructure is solid, but the Palestinians struggle. The rift between
those who believe the land belongs to the Jews and those who believe it belongs to others is what is at issue. Yet, one can look at the New World
that was "discovered" by Christopher Columbus and say the same thing. It really belongs to the Indians because they were there first. In fact, there are little Indian nations within
the midst of the U.S. and this situation is tolerated by the Indians as well as by the U.S. citizens. At the same time, the Indians are really not happy
with the bit of land and their legacy they acquired after their property was seized. Still, the takeover is accepted. The question in respect to the Middle East is whether
or not Israel had done the same thing. The only problem in the Middle East that makes things different is the biblical veil that envelopes the state. It adds mystery
