The bourgeoisie used their capital to create income from assets other than ones own labour. The bourgeoisie were the class opposite to the proletariat; the lowest working class, with no capital of their own and without their own production means must earn a wage by the sale of their labour. The natural outcome of dividing the population into two classes was to place them in opposition, there were the bourgeoisie who would want to exploit the proletariat whereas the proletariat would want to increase their earning power and gain wealth, but could not do this when the bourgeoisie were in control (Marx, 1848). In todays world there is a similar parallel dawn between shareholders and employees, with both set of company stakeholders being on opposing sides of the same model, shareholders wanting to accumulate capital, employees wanting better wages, job satisfaction or better conditions, all o f which will reduce the potential return for the shareholders. It has been argued that the use of employee stock options or share ownership schemes is a way of bridging this gap and creating shareowners out of employees. Businesses may have many goals, the primary goal is often stated as being the need to create a profit for the shareholders who are the business owners.
