the causes and determine potential solutions1. McDonalds are a fast food chain, with many restaurants operating under a franchise agreement. The
stores are open long hours, late at night, this means that there is a requirement for staff to attend these hours, The need for evening staff facilities employment for those
who cannot or choose not to undertake work during usual office hours, this includes students and part time worker who may work around families or part time to supplement a
full time wage. The restaurant staff that work during the morning and afternoon shifts appear to be well motivated, there is a high level of productivity, a high degree of
social cohesion and the staff appeared to be settled and satisfied. However, the same is not true of the evening and night shifts; it is here that there appears to
be a lack of motivation. The symptoms of this appear to be a lack of commitment, with increased time wasting and lower productivity, the night shift also has other negative
behavioural traits , such as poor time keeping, higher levels of absenteeism that the day shifts and a higher level of staff attrition, these are associated with low motivation levels
(Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). In order to assess why there are problems with motivation on the night shift it is necessary to consider
the different influences; there are different employees with a higher level of part time and student employees and the potential for different needs as well as look at any different
