A 8 page paper discussing conditions and events leading to Ecuador and Peru reaching agreement after more than 50 years of negotiation and even war. The nations have been involved in a border dispute since before Ecuador gained its independence in 1830. The Rio Protocol of 1942 set forth guidelines and decisions of where the border between the two countries should be located, but there have been several points of the border in dispute ever since. The two nations have even come to the point of armed conflict in their frustrations, but reached agreement in 1998 after agreeing to defer to the decision of the guarantor nations of Chile, Argentina, Brazil and the US.
