tend to resist change. They have a hard time quitting smoking or losing weight. Very much of the time, people stay the same most of their lives. There is even a saying that suggests people do not change. In organizations, the same thing occurs. The employees will resist any change that management tries to implement. Why do people resist change? Some fear the unknown and they prefer security ("Why change," 2004). Others may just like the status quo. There are many reasons for this, but while that is the case, one has to wonder whether resistance is a bad thing. Most business leaders concur that change is good and that resistance is inevitable but something that one can cope with. Pihulyk (2003) explains: " Organizations implementing change may find that the comfort level of some individuals within will be compromised, bringing about possible resistance. If not understood and carefully dealt with, the resistance may cause a fair amount of tension and conflict, undermining any positive outcome" (p.27). Indeed, most leaders agree with this sentiment that while resistance will occur, it is a negative thing but is something that can be handled. Of course, not all business leaders agree. Peter de Jager (2001) suggests that some resistance is good. He explains that if one tries to get rid of all resistance, then they may be ignoring a legitimate function of resistance which is to "avoid unnecessary change" (2001, p.24). It is like the parent who ignores a child who always lies. The child is told to tell the truth but the parent does not listen to something that appears to be a fabrication.
