Healthy Sexual Development: Perceptions of Young Adults" explores the manner in which masturbation is perceived by young adults, as well as the impact this perception ultimately has upon sexual health.
The major assumption of the theory is that masturbation can be valuable to promoting overall sexual health, but that this value is inhibited by problems with how people learn about
and perceive masturbation; as the researchers puts it, because masturbation is "relegated to the realm of commercial media, rather than rational discourse in families, schools, and the general public, young
people receive mixed messages about this non-reproductive sexual behavior" (Kaestle & Allen, 2011). This theory put forth by the researchers is in contrast to a great deal of existing
literature on masturbation and sexuality, especially that from prior to the turn of the 20th century. While masturbation is no longer regarded as dangerous or "a disease" by the majority
of medical professionals today, it "is still a dangerous topic for politicians and researchers to address, as the general public still considers masturbation to be a sensitive and uncomfortable topic
to discuss" (Kaestle & Allen, 2011). This attitude reveals a lasting taboo against masturbation even in contemporary society, reflecting the unspoken assumption that masturbation is somehow morally wrong, or even
detrimental. In other words, the alternative theories are almost a complete negation and reversal of the theory posited in the research article. The advantages of the new theoretical view
of masturbation is that it can provide insights into why this taboo against masturbation persists, and overcome its capacity to "prevent rational discourse" (Kaestle & Allen, 2011). The outright refusal
