is often cutting edge in terms of its approach and immediate humanitarian value. The purpose of this paper is to provide a written research critique on one quantitative research study,
Harrison, Evans, Johnston, and Loughnans "Bedside Assessment of Heel Lance Pain in the Hospitalized Infant" published in the Sep/Oct 2002 edition of the "Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal
Nursing". This article was chosen because of its applicability to the common problem of assessing pain perception among infant patients. This research study is particularly appropriate for this
review in that it provides a strong, statistically-based, analysis of a topic which is often considered only qualitative in nature, the topic of pain perception.
The chosen study is unique in that it evaluates the feasibility of assessing pain among a particular difficult population, newborn infants who can not verbally communicate
their pain or allow the researcher any means of utilizing patient self-assessment of pain as can occur in older patients. The procedure which is evaluated in terms of pain
is heel lancing. Heel lancing to obtain blood samples is a common neonatal procedure. It is, however, a procedure with obvious concerns in regard to the pain which
is inflicted on the newborn patient. As has been noted above, the problem inherent in evaluating an infants pain revolves around
