is considered to be one of the most powerful pieces of literature from the 20th century, and clearly likely the most important Latin American work, and author, of all time. It is a work known for its magical realism, and a work well known for its unique commentaries on many subtle, and obvious, social conditions. One of the most important elements in this story appears to be its historical focus, in subtle and obvious ways. The following research examines this works relationship to history, aside from its literary position. Research on One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez It appears that Marquez once noted that, "One Hundred Years of Solitude is not a history of Latin America, it is a metaphor for Latin America (Dreifus 1983:1974)" (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, (1928-): One Hundred Years of Solitude, 1967). And, it is clearly a metaphor for the history of the people and the land as "The historical themes include conquest and colonization, settlement and scientific discovery, civil wars, foreign economic intervention, technological change, and finally the decay and disappearance of a long-established way of life" (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, (1928-): One Hundred Years of Solitude, 1967). This work is the result of a long period of isolation for Marquez, who, in 1965, apparently locked himself in his study for three years as he came out of a stage of writers block (Estorino). And, in that three years of solitude himself, he clearly reveals a work that deeply uncovers some historical perspectives, from the perspective of humanity itself and his particular country.
