fact, delirium has been associated with more than 25 different terms that are intended to describe a spectrum of psychotic symptoms (McGohan, 2005). Marshall and Soucy (2005) explain that delirium
in the ICU (i.e., "ICU psychosis") is a serious complication as it impedes healing and recovery and increases the incidence of both morbidity and mortality. Symptoms of delirium include "anxiety,
restlessness, insomnia and disturbing dreams" (Marshall and Soucy, 2005, p. 173). This topic was chosen for investigation due to the fact that it is has a greater incidence among
elderly ICU patients and this demographic groups happens to be the fastest growing segment of the population (Marshall and Soucy, 2003). This suggests that ICU nurses should not only be
cognizant of the symptoms and treatment of delirium (aka, ICU psychosis), but should e able up-to-date on how this manifests in patients over 65 years of age. However, even though
this condition is prevalent, it condition is frequently unrecognized by clinicians, despite the fact that it is prevalent. It has been reported that 30 percent of surgical ICU patients experience
delirium (Marshall & Soucy, 2005). Considering this statistic and the fact that ICU psychosis is particularly prevalent among elderly patients, it is important for nurses to recognize this condition.
Furthermore, it is also crucial for nurses to also recognize its association with other similar conditions, such dementia, as delirium can be superimposed over dementia (DSD)(Fick, et al, 2007). To
investigate the state of current knowledge, Fick, et al (2007) devised a qualitative study that measured nursing identification of DSD in a study that utilized standardized case scenarios and the
Mary Starke Harper Aging Knowledge Exam. The results of this study indicated that the participant nurses (n=29) had a high level of knowledge pertaining to elderly patients, but that they
