grounded theory, and using a variety of instrumental approaches including case study, appreciative inquiry, collaborative inquiry, phenomenology inquiry, action research tools, questionnaires, and focus groups. The chosen methodology and design
are outlined in detail below. Overview of Research To begin, a brief word on the topic of inquiry, so that the methodology might be discussed in more context-rich
detail. Community colleges are in a unique position as a "cultural nexus" for localized communities around the country, and for this reason, they are an important part of the campaign
to push sustainability in modern culture (Stephens 2010, p. 48). To be sure, many colleges are embracing this responsibility already, with some researchers noting that hundreds of colleges across the
country are "cultivating sustainable living in the United States... by developing policies and plans to initiate actions through students and faculty" (Spilde 2009, p. 6). For example, the Illinois Department
of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has created a coalition of some 48 colleges to act as cultural centers for teaching sustainable practices and offering degree courses in career paths directly
related to sustainability such as civic planning and environmental sciences (Jacobson 2010, p. 929). Some colleges are also leading by example, such as Butte College in California, which produces "more
solar power than any other community college in the country and is a nationally recognized leader in sustainability" (Orr 2010, p. 20). As a model to study the trend of
