ages of eighteen and twenty-five experience significantly diminished braking reflexes when engaged in conversations on their cell phones. This reduced reaction time was likened to drivers in the sixty-five
and seventy-four age bracket. According to Croal (2005), "such distracted drivers braked 18 percent more slowly and took 17 percent more time to resume the same speed after braking.
Even the use of a hands-free phone failed to improve performance" (p. 12). The issue at hand is not necessarily the act of removing ones hands from the steering
wheel or momentarily taking ones eyes off the road to answer or place a call; rather, it is the minds distraction with holding the conversation that causes the most problem.
When asked to recall certain landmarks or incidents that occurred while they were en route on the phone, most were hard-pressed to summon up a single one. Clearly,
this absence of focus upon an inanimate object like a tree or restaurant sign translate into a driver whose reaction time - or lack thereof - will most certainly be
