multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG). These are played Online with participants from around the world. Gamers develop their own characters or avatars and pursue goals. The overriding concern is that players become addicts. Players play these games for much longer periods of time than they played regular computer games. One of the dangers these games present to adolescents is taking on different roles during their own fragile time for development. One area that needs to be explored is the motivation of adolescents who seem to be addicted to these games. Psychologists have identified two major categories of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from within the person, extrinsic motivation is external. Feeling good about an accomplishment is an example of intrinsic motivation, receiving rewards for a job well done is extrinsic motivation. With MMORPGs, players advance by accumulating certificates, rewards, weapons, and other valuables. There is a strong social component in these games because players must cooperate with each other if they are to succeed. There is also a degree of escapism (Li, Liau & Khoo, 2011). In one aspect, these games allow adolescents to try on different personalities and traits which is not totally bad. A great deal of concern has been expressed regarding the amount of time adolescents spend playing Online games. Chiou and Wan (2007) focused on motivation and considered the addicted adolescent and the non-addicted adolescent. The researchers comment that their study was the first to approach the issue of Online gaming addiction from the cognitive perspective of motivation.
