observation during the middle ages. Today there is a great deal more knowledge regarding the way research can be gathered in order to discover truth or test ideas. A large amount of literature has been written, by looking at two different books on the subject of research we can get an overview of the approaches that may be taken and the wide variety of choice. It is also important that good solid books are chosen to guide the student so by reviewing two books to gain an oversight in the advice and value they can offer the student. The first book is by Bryman, published in 2001 and titled Social Research Methods published by Oxford University Press. This has been updated as the 1002 edition is the second edition, although there were not a great deal of changes. This book gives a good oversight in to the different forms of research and approaches that can be taken. There are two approaches that can be taken, both of which are covered in this book; qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative research relies more on a large amount of results, with the data being recorded often being predominately numerical, it is suitable to be used as a method of determining cause and effect relationships. The methodologies for this approach will often be based on scientific procedures of investigation. Quantitative research includes descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental and experimental (Curwin and Slater, 2001).
