(IRB)? The researchers note in their section called Participants that each of the women participants in the study was required to sign
an informed consent forms before participation in the study, and that the forms and study format were approved by the review boards of the participating institutions. 2.
Identify the design selected for this study. Is this an appropriate design fro the study to answer the research question and/or test the hypothesis?
The authors note that details for the study design were previously published in Sowers et al (2000). They briefly outline the design
for the study called the SWAN study, which is a multi-center, multi-ethnic, community-based cohort study of women and the menopausal transition. The SWAN study was conducted in seven different
environments, and was comprised of a multiethnic population of 3302 women. The rationale for this study is to determine within the largest possible population to take a broad
look at the link between reproductive hormones and cardiovascular disease as they age. This research design, then, is adequate for the research hypothesis and reflects the desire to incorporate
findings of a large population of women of varied ethnicities. Does the design designate the correct data to measure and how the researcher is to collect the data?
Briefly explain your answer. The researchers not only identify the types of data that will be collected, but they
define the populations, identify methods for inclusion for enrollment in the SWAN study and outline the data that will be collected blood assays, physical measures and statistical measures.
