has taken on numerous twists with the introduction of new technology and new ways of thinking about parenthood. With each of those twists come certain ethical considerations, however. One scenario which really stretches the imagination in terms of all of the ethical ramifications is a scenario of an aged couple who decides to have a baby via en vitro fertilization and the implantation of the embryo in a surrogate mother. The couple, John (aged seventy) and Jane (aged sixty-six) have enjoyed thirty years of living together in harmony as well as success in their business endeavors. They have no living relatives, however, and have decided that they want to pursue this drastic option since they have exhausted all other possibilities in terms of having a child. John and Jane discovered in their earlier years that they were infertile. They considered other reproductive technologies but those were too costly and unsuccessful. They even tried to adopt a newborn child but were turned down several times for one reason or another. At this late point in their lives artificial insemination of a surrogate mother was their only viable option. That option, however, is replete with many ethical considerations. As we shall see, those ethical considerations become even more complicated as the scenario unfolds. John and Jane secured the sperm, egg and surrogate mother for their venture by placing an ad in a magazine. The two donars and the surrogate do not know one another. The egg is fertilized in the lab and successfully implanted in the surrogate but in the surrogates fourth month of pregnancy a couple of unexpected developments arise. John and Jane ...
