Colonialism inevitably had incredible effects on indigenous peoples around the world. These effects are recorded in a variety of formats.
Literature, of course, has been among the more prominent of these formats. Consider, for example, the novel "Orphan of Asia". Set in the early twentieth century, the "Orphan
of Asia" illustrates life of the commoner in Taiwan in the transition that occurred between Japanese imperialism and Chinese colonial rule. It illustrates the changing cultural tide that swept over
the land in the transition between imperial Chinese influence and earlier Japanese supremacy. The main character in the "Orphan of Asia"
is Hu Taiming. The novel traces Taimings experiences over much of his life as he desperately tries to adjust to the radically changing world in which he lives.
It must be remembered when considering how radical this change must have been that Taiming first experienced almost overnight being ripped away from his familys traditional culture, full immersion in
Japanese culture, and finally the expectation to seamlessly assimilate into Chinese culture. The Japanese, of course, had actively tried to assimilate
