womens rights. As she eloquently and succinctly pointed out, the culture of the time differentiated between white and black women. Sojourner said, "That man over there says that women need
to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches...Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles...And aint I a woman?" (Truth). Her point was not that she desired this
sort of servitude, but rather to draw attention to the fact that she could and did work as hard as man, "bear the lash" as well as any man, and
still produce and grief over the loss of her children (Truth). Her point was that women are capable, but it can also be gathered from her statements that society differentiated
between white women, who were regarded as fragile creatures to be protected and pampered, and black women, who were treated with about as much consideration as a pack animal.
Presumably all that has changed and black women, as well as black men, are accorded precisely the same considerations and evaluations as their white counterparts. But is this true? This
examination of representations of black women in mainstream media seeks to determine not only the content and context of these representations, but also how these advertisements affect the lives of
black women and women of color. There is a saying that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," which attests to the epistemological essence of the concept of
beauty, as this can differ greatly from society to society and even from individual to individual. In other words of beauty occurs within a cultural context. Considering this, several facts
