embodies a number of issues. This paper returns to the film again and applies representational strategy to the character of Will Hunting. Discussion "Representational strategy" is briefly defined as the way in which people "represent their environments and experiences mentally" so that their "thoughts, feelings, and actions toward self and others are based on these perceptions and representations" (Grant). It is these "abstract representations," not real events and objects that "guide our actions" (Grant). This explains why two people can look at the same object or be involved in the same situation and have two totally different reactions to it. In this case, the situation that is seen from different perspectives is nothing less than Will Huntings life. Hunting (Matt Damon) is a tough kid from a working-class neighborhood in Boston; a high-school dropout and an unambitious drifter who also happens to be a mathematical genius; he can work problems that stump even professors (Ebert, 1997). But he seems to have no appreciation for his genius; he simply doesnt understand that hes gifted, and that is one of the most puzzling parts of the film-how can he not know how good he is? (Ebert, 1997). He doesnt recognize it as being of any importance perhaps, as Ebert points out, because he is a janitor and used to hard physical work, which he understands and appreciates (Ebert, 1997). Solving equations is simple for him, so he doesnt equate it with work and by extension, doesnt see its value. If Ebert were writing the paper he couldnt have done a better job of showing how representational strategy works, ...
