New Deal policies for the most part were already in place. Still, the South represents a generally poorer area than the North. This is something well known. In fact, the
South is most known for the slavery it supported due to the economic hardships it would encounter without the institution. The North had its factories and big business, and to
some extent, this difference lingers to this day. The South has challenges now and it certainly did in a decade where the entire country was struggling. The report was
ordered and the Presidents letter explains why. Some information from that letter published in the printing of the report is as follows: " It?is my conviction that the South
presents right now the?Nations No. 1 economic problem--the Nations problem,?not merely the Souths. For we have an economic unbalance in the Nation as a whole, due to this very condition
of the South. It is an unbalance that can and must be righted, for the sake of the South and of the Nation" ("Report on Economic Conditions of the South"
1). The stated purpose of the report is to correct problems in the South. The idea is that the South is struggling, but there is no quantitative data for the
president to look at. Therefore, a report is ordered to see the situation in the South exactly and then to do something about the problems there. The report goes into
detail on a number of topics. The research broaches subjects such as the water supply, the soil, education, housing and health. It covers most anything one would want to know
about daily life and the conditions in the region. This is a 66 page report. However, in examining the report, some of the more interesting things may be summarized.
