Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page essay that argues against the social movement that demands reparations for slavery. The reparations for slavery movement proposes that the United States federal government should, first of all, apologize to the descendents of slaves for the fact that the despicable institution of slavery was legally sanctioned in both colonial and early American history. Secondly, this movement proposes that financial reparations should be made to the descendents of slaves. While, on the surface, this argument has merit, as this aspect of American history is recognized as reprehensible, a thoughtful examination of the issues involved shows that making reparations for slavery is simply not feasible, either from a social justice or fiscal perspective. No bibliography is offered.

American Civil War can be regarded as an effort on the part of the Northern states to rectify a grievous social injustice. On the other hand, an ethical case can
be made that the states belonging to the Confederacy should apologize. The State of Virginia has apologized formally, both to African Americans and to Native Americans. However, issuing a formal
statement of regret does not equate with agreement to attempt to make financial reparations, as this task is extremely problematic. First of all, the U.S. government has never kept
track of who, precisely, in the American population is descended from slaves, and identification of race for government statistics relies on self-report. As there was, and is, considerable consanguity between
the races, skin color cannot be used as a definitive indication of race, as an individual with a very light skin tone and Caucasian facial features can still be a
direct descendent of slaves. Furthermore, history records that some African Americans were slave owners themselves. Therefore, their descendents would not be entitled to reparation payments according to the principles of
