of slaves they, more often than not, immediately think such an idea or movement is ridiculous. They ask, not only how can such a condition of the past be remedied,
but also why it should be addressed now, after many generations have passed and no one alive today was responsible for the enslavement of the African people. But, in all
actuality, the reparation movement involves keeping promises made by the government to the African American people. These were promises that were never kept, and the movement argues that it is
our duty, as a nation, to make good on our promises. With that in mind the following paper examines the issues involved with the reparation movement. Reparation for
Slavery It was back in 1865 that "General William Tecumseh Sherman made the infamous promise of forty acres and a mule to thousands of freed slaves, a promise which was
promptly rescinded by Andrew Jackson when President Lincoln was assassinated" (Griffin-James). This particular topic has been touched on, now and again, throughout the times that have followed. However, "most of
the efforts to bring it to the forefront have been initiated in the last decade or so. Attempts prior to that, such as in 1963 when Queen Mother Moore
submitted to President Kennedy a petition with over a million signatures calling for reparations, went largely unnoticed" (Griffin-James). Of course, this does not mean that the more focused attention
in the past few decades have offered any more positive results than efforts in the past. For example, "Representative John Conyers, Jr., Democratic Michigan submitted legislation in 1989 calling for
the creation of a committee to study the effects of racism and the possibility of reparations. He has introduced the same legislation every year since then and every year
