was so called because of the great economic growth that took place then, apparently in preparation for the stock market crash that would send the country into the Great Depression,
where it would remain for a decade before being lifted out by the economic effects of World War II. It was shortly after
the end of World War I and at the beginning of the economic phenomenon that would end so tragically that the original Soldier Field stadium was built. It carried
the adornment features popular at the time, complete with stately Doric columns rising above its stone fa?ade. Renovation The stadium was quite adequate
at the time, and for more than 30 years it has been home to the Chicago Bears football team. The teams ability to generate revenues has been severely restricted
by lack of additional available seats, however, and the Bears ownership asked the city of Chicago to build it a new stadium. That,
after all, has been the trend in professional sports of all kinds, but particularly in professional football. This system in itself has been one of controversy, at least in
recent years. Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations that it should be local governments responsibility to provide public structures such as roads, and by extension, stadiums.
These are structures that are expensive to build and ones from which individual owners would find it difficult to recoup expenses. That may have been the case with public
