Whether or not this hyperbole is true, or Jean Renoir is simply one of the greatest directors of all time, the consensus among his peers is that this was a remarkably talented visual storyteller. While Renoirs fame rests on the numerous special qualities of his thirty-eight films, which span a forty-five year career, one of his principal achievements lies in his development of innovative cinematic technique, the wide variety of technical and stylistics methods that he employed to give his films life (The Rules of the Game). In this regard, the follow discussion will examine two of his films Une Partie Campagne (A Day in the Country) and Le Regle Du Jeu (The Rules of the Game). Une Partie Campagne (A Day in the Country) is a short film, only thirty-seven minutes long. Nevertheless, it is a faithful adaptation of a short story by Guy de Maupassant and an excellent example of director Jean Renoirs impressionistic style (A Day in the Country). The entire film takes place on a single Sunday afternoon. A middle class family have come to the country for a Sunday excursion next to the river. The family consists of Monsieur Dufour, his wife, and daughter and his daughters fiance, Anatole. They are observed by two young men, Henri and Rodolphe, who propose to seduce the women in the party. Renoir imbues this short film with a physical and emotional texture that makes it completely his own, despite his faithfulness to the source material.
