century he became one of the most famous artists of his particular movement and one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The following paper examines his life
and his art. Rene Magritte As mentioned, Magritte was born at the end of the 19th century and was born in Belgium (Olgas Gallery). He studied art in
Brussels and was a wallpaper designer as well as commercial artist (Olgas Gallery). His early paintings show a clear Cubist and Futuristic look and then he was later inspired by
the Purist movement (Olgas Gallery). However, his style began to clearly emerge as his own once he was introduced to Dadaistic poetry and a group of Dadaists in the early
20s and then he created "his first painting that he allowed to be labeled as Surrealist" called "The Last Jockey" (Olgas Gallery).
When one looks at "The Jockey" one can immediately see how it is surrealistic, but yet one can also see how it is quite a infant approach to the form
in comparison to his later works when his style was surely formed. In this paitning there is an almost realistic look to the jockey and horse, or rather the beginnings
of realism as though it were a sketch. There is not the boldness of lines and the use of color that would represent the work of Magritte, but yet the
other elements clearly speak of the surrealism to come. We see what almost appear as chess pieces, or lathed pieces of wood, that stand in this forest of snow and
