has a history reaching practically all the way back to the beginning of mankinds reign on earth. A particularly interesting period of this history was the European Renaissance. The Renaissance would consume Europe from the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries. While most frequently the Renaissance is associated with the changes which occurred during this time, the Renaissance was actually a period in which practically every aspect of European life from art to religion would experience a rapid evolution. Slavery would become an important part of that evolution. Prenhall (2004) notes that: "Although the Renaissance is often viewed as a progressive era, slavery flourished as extravagantly as art and culture. As a result of the ravages of the Black Death (1348-1350) on the free laborpool, the demand for slaves soared and they were imported from Africa, the Balkans, Crete, and the lands surrounding the Black Sea". During the Renaissance there would be a massive financial expansion as well as a corresponding population growth. The Renaissance can be termed neither solely positive or solely negative in regard to its influence on culture and people. There would be tremendous literary and musical advancements but on the other hand there would be an even greater move towards colonization of other lands and consequently the subjugation or at least the exploitation of the indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia and the Americas. During the Renaissance a very small group of the worlds peoples would exert control over the masses.
