music has existed. People have always written songs about love lost, love hoped for, and love experienced. During the Renaissance people were experimenting greatly with love songs as music was
not all about religion perhaps. There was, it seems, more freedom and with the Black Plague behind them the society of the Renaissance could essentially branch out in hopes for
the future. Love songs were part of that reality. The following paper examines love songs from the Renaissance. Love Songs One author notes that during the Renaissance, although
still immersed in religious beliefs, also saw "a great flourishing of songs dedicated to secular topics, predominatly love, in the 15th through the early 17th centuries" (Renaissance Love Songs Study
Guide, 2005). This period in history also saw the invention of printing so that music could then be printed and be distributed throughout the nations (Renaissance Love Songs Study Guide,
2005). Music "and poetic ideas travelled rapidly around Europe, creating a distinctive set of ideas which elaborated themes inherited from the troubadours and their descendents. The notion of courtly love
was now hardly taken seriously, but its imagery was still powerful" (Renaissance Love Songs Study Guide, 2005). In the Renaissance we also see the presence of madrigals. They were songs
that were performed with four to six singers, comprising a group of individuals making different sounds and imitations. "A madrigal is secular music. This is non-religious music. Madrigals were usually
love songs" (Renaissance, 2005). In terms of the songs one of the most popular, and a song that is still known today, is Greensleeves. Today most people know the
