This paper discusses the philosophy known as Renaissance humanism and one of the works that it inspired, "The School of Athens" by Raphael. Discussion Renaissance humanism is the name given to the philosophical movement that occurred approximately 1400-1650 (Kreis, 2000). Like some, if not most, philosophies, at least according to one scholar, it was not able to offer any substantial benefits to humanity in the way that Christianity could (Martines, 1990). Christianity claimed to be "universally beneficial in scope because it offered something to all people, even to converts from Islam or Judaism" (Martines, 1990, p. 105). But humanism couldnt say the same: it demanded years of study, much of it Greek and Latin; its students were also expected to study history, rhetoric, poetry and "moral philosophy" and it resolutely avoided equipping its adherents with anything remotely resembling a skill that could be used to combat hunger or any of the other ills of the medieval world (Martines, 1990, p. 105). (We might note that strictly speaking, its very difficult for anyone to defend the study of philosophy as being a "practical" discipline. It provides outstanding mental exercise, but its difficult to see how debates about the nature of reality translate into well-paying jobs that put food on the table.) However, to be fair to the humanists, they never claimed that "intensive study of the classical languages and literatures aimed to benefit or illumine the multitudes of people in their everyday pursuits" (Martines, 1990, p. 105).
