It was the Renaissance of thought, art, music, culture, science, exploration, and discovery. The Renaissance was the foundation for the vigorous and new culture of the modern West. The actual word renaissance literally means "rebirth" NS was first employed in 1855 by the French historian Jules Michelet to refer to the "discovery of the world and of man" in the 16th century (Kirshner iii). The horrendous 14th century epidemic of the plague called the "Black Death" and the depopulation it caused, as well as a lingering economic depression were the major causes of the collapse. The wars raging within and between countries also led toward inevitable collapse. Add in the division and decay that existed with the Roman papacy and the continent-wide collapse of the "old order" was unavoidable. The worst of times ran from the middle of the 1300s to the middle of the 1400s. At that point, that particular major disaster of Europe began to turn around - culturally, economically, and scientifically (Esler 346). The "Black Death" first struck in 1347. At that time Europes population was just over 70 million. By 1400, the number of people had declined to approximately 45 million. One century later there were almost 70 million Europeans and by the turn of the following century, the population had reached nearly 90 million.
