color and subject matter. In many ways there are only so many techniques and approaches one can take in art and all art is thus very cohesive in its form
of expression. This does not mean that one period of art or architecture is the same as another, but it is to say that there are elements, themes of expression,
and other conditions that are to be found in all periods. Bearing this in mind we present an examination, a comparison and contrast, of the Renaissance and Modern art periods.
The paper also discusses, comparing and contrasting, the architecture of these periods. Before discussion of these subjects a definition of each period is presented. Renaissance "The Italian
Renaissance is considered by historians the beginning of the modern age. The name itself literally means rebirth, an accurate description of this period of innovation in both the sciences and
the arts" (Anonymous Key Innovations and Artists of the Italian Renaissance, 2002; early_ren.htm). There was an incredible change in how people examined their world and how they approached art and
architecture, along with sciences and literature. "This renewed interest in history, literature, and the arts was the birth of a whole new way of thinking, one which centered on the
world of mankind as much as a concern for the hereafter (which was the sole concern of medieval man). This new way of thinking is called humanism, tracing back to
