creates the illusion of depth. Renaissance art is also characterized by the fact that art was regarded as a celebration of beauty. In Lives of the Painters, Sculptors and
Architects, which was published in 1550 by Giorgio Vasari, the Renaissance is divided into three periods and the last of these, the High Renaissance, according to Vasari, is when artists
obtained the quality he called "grazia," which he used to describe a "kind of perfect divine beauty" (Witcombe). A work of art came to be regarded not simply as a
product of the artists skill and imagination, but also as encompassing "some divine inspiration, a spiritual essence emanating from God" (Witcombe). The Renaissance revival of Platonism helped to disseminate the
