versatile and important tool that can be used in a variety of applications, some of which are unexpected, to say the least. This paper defines what remote sensing is,
traces its history briefly, and explores some of its uses and what it might become in the future. What Is Remote Sensing? Remote sensing "can be defined as
the collection of data about an object from a distance" (Pidwirny). It has almost limitless applications in a wide range of fields, including city planning, forestry, military observation and
archaeological investigation among others (Pidwirny). Geographers, of whom Pidwirny is one, use remote sensors to "monitor or measure phenomena found in the Earths lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere" (Pidwirny).
The sensors are often positioned at some distance from the object theyre studying, aboard planes, satellites and helicopters (Pidwirny). Most of the sensors work by "measuring an objects
transmission of electromagnetic energy from reflecting and radiating surfaces" (Pidwirny). Remote sensing in its simplest form "uses photographic cameras to record information from visible or near infrared wavelengths" (Pidwirny).
Although we probably think of remote sensing most frequently with regard to such things as a GPS system, a very high-tech tool, remote sensing has been around for a
long time. In the 1800s, "cameras were positioned above the Earths surface in balloons or kites to take oblique aerial photographs of the landscape" (Pidwirny). Aerial photography was
used during WWI to gather information about troop movements, and can probably be considered the starting point for remote sensing as we know it today, since it demonstrated that information
could be gathered from a distance. Aerial photography is still used in many environments, and it seems a logical assumption that it can be considered the first of the
