memories are evoked by foods, and food is a part of important memories. This is something easily supported. Many people do think back to their childhood and what their favorite
dishes were. Holidays often revolve around food. People will remember the horrible sweet potato and marshmallow concoction their aunt made or the green bean casserole that would be a part
of every holiday meal. There is even a web site devoted to selling candies from various decades that is tied to ones home town. Often, it is the case that
memories are entrenched in food. Suttons (2001) attention to this subject is compelling because it prompts one to investigate memory and its importance as it relates to food. Yet,
the author begins his book by explaining how the subject of food and anthropology is not well received and that it is yet to be considered a legitimate area of
study (Sutton, 2001). While the author has to convince the reader of the legitimacy of his inquiry, it is really not necessary. After all, most would agree that food plays
an enormous role in the lives of people. People in every culture eat many times during the day. In fact, food is something that is consumed and purchased perhaps more
than anything else, as it is something that people need to live. Yet, food is also attached to culture and religion. For Sutton (2001) food is very powerful in
the lives of people and therefore, it is not a stretch to tie it to memory. Memory is often attached to things like identity, class and gender (Sutton, 2001). Many
