She did this through active correspondence, and has provided a valuable and often humorous insight into the times. Introduction In the eighteenth century few families educated their daughters beyond the ability to read their Bible and manage accounts with the local merchant. As she grew older, and with the help of a literate father, Abigail educated her self, and became one of the best read women of the time. According to one of her biographers, her "gaps in education bothered her and were apparent in her letters. Her spelling was inconsistent and poor, and her inability to use punctuation properly and her poor penmanship embarrassed her" (http://www.theglassceiling.com/biographies/bio2.htm). Yet for us as readers, it makes her letters all the more valuable, as it demonstrates her passion and commitment to make a statement, during the formation of the countrys history. The Letters Abigails letters, first tell us of her personal life with John; they married when she was seventeen, and spent 54 years together. In the intimacy that only letters can produce, she would begin her correspondence to her husband, "Dearest Friend," and sign them "Portia" (http://www.masshist.org/bh/aadams.html). They also present a strong picture of the demands of an eighteenth century household and five pregnancies. John was a beginning lawyer and sought clients throughout the Northeast. Abigail stayed and home and managed a prospering farm, and the needs of their growing family.
