and Frans Hals Merry Lute Player (1627), which is indicative of Hals early, more carefree period. Later in his life, when he came under the sobering influence of Rembrandt, Hals
gave up his use of vivid colors and his light touch and focused on more somber hues and serious subjects, which brought his work more in line with that of
Rembrandt (Fleming 264). The subject of Merry Lute Player was probably an entertainer at a local tavern (Fleming 264). Hals use of line indicates the source of the light
entering the portrait as the players raised glass of wine sparkles, casting light on both the face of the player and his instrument (Fleming 264). Tousled hair, his cap set
at a jaunty angle, the lute player appreciatively eyes his glass. The effect is that the artist has captured him in mid-toast to a night of good times and joyful
feelings. Hals brushwork presents interesting contrasts in texture. It has been said of Hals that he "painted as if fencing," flicking his brush as if it were a foil
(His own work 96). This produces a velvety-look to the players tunic, yet the instrument distinctly has the high gloss of polished wood. The effect conveys a richness to the
scene and, in so doing, supports the feeling of gaiety that the painting imparts. Likewise, Hals use of color value provides contrasts that add to the variety and richness of
