of the lights that led the West out of the Dark Ages and towards the light of the Renaissance." Discussion Before we can consider Dante, we need to know a
bit of history. The "Dark Ages" is the term given to the period in history between the collapse of Roman control of Europe in the 5th century to about the
11th Century (History of the Dark Ages, 2005). Western Europe was conquered repeatedly by Germanic tribes, and the culture remained primitive with "virtually no machinery of government" extant (History of
the Dark Ages, 2005). Politics was local, there was little or no commerce, and the peasants became "bound to the land" and dependent on the landowners for protection and what
little justice there was (History of the Dark Ages, 2005). The only universal organization left in Europe was the Roman Catholic Church, and it was fragmented, with power in the
hands of local bishops-the idea of the church with the Pope as its infallible leader was 500 years in the future (History of the Dark Ages, 2005). Most of the
learning that took place was dedicated to organizing knowledge about the past; there was no attempt to look ahead. It was, in short, an age of barbarism, with Rome gone,
the church shattered, culture and learning at a standstill, repeated invasions, little or no national government, and the feudal system in place. There was no real progress in any field
for almost 600 years, and of course, it was a superstitious time as well. The word "Renaissance" literally means "rebirth," and thats what it was. The term is usually associated
